Sprouston Green

Name - Probably from the Old English - 'tun' - the farmstead, of someone called 'Sprow'.

Graveyard Record - Recorded by the Borders Family History Society in Vol IV 'Sprouston & Lempitlaw' (2nd edition) of their 'Roxburghshire Monumental Inscriptions. (Available by post from McGregor's Scottish Borders Books, Kelso (01573 225309)

Famous People Associated

  • Rev David Fraser - minister of the village church, who, being a very keen sweet pea grower, entered the Daily Mail National Sweet Pea competition in London in 1911 and won both first and third prize. He used the £1150 prize money to extend the chancel of the church.
  • Thomas Carruthers - Scotland's champion all-round sprinter during the years 1860-1872. He competed at all the Border Games and was also the Border Champion. He later went on to become equally famous as a golf club maker- Callaway still use Carruthers technology today in their S2H2 iron clubs. A book has been written about his achievements. His father Peter was born in Sprouston in 1812 and his grandparents-Thomas and Catherine (nee Wilson)lived there.
